SCUDEM IV 2019 Math Modeling Challenge

I led the Emory University team (members: Emily Rexer, Esteban Ramos, Percy Xie) in the undergraduate math modeling contest in 2019. We had a great time in the contest and won the second place in the final!

Emily now works at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Esteban went on to pursue a PhD at UCSC after a stint in industry. Percy is now a master's student at UChicago.

Emory University PostDoctoral Association (EU-PDA)

To better serve the community of postdocs at Emory, in summer 2020, I together with several other postdocs founded Emory University PostDoctoral Association (EU-PDA). I was elected as chair of Mentorship and Outreach subcommitee, drafting mission statement in EU-PDA ByLaws and coordinating regular meetings. Please see next section for more information.

EU-PDA Mentorship and Outreach (since 2020)

I have been chairing the Mentorship and Outreach subcommitee of EU-PDA since 2020. Over the years, I've worked with wonderful co-chairs: Johnasha Stuart from Aug. 2020 to Jun. 2021, Brandon Young from Jul. 2021 to Sep. 2021, and Leyla Eghbalzad from Oct. 2021.

We collaborate with the NIH-funded IMSD program to help build a multilevel mentoring system and promote diversity of the scientific workforce. We provide help to students and mentoring opportunities to postdocs through the mentor-mentee pairing program and have organized a partner event with Emory University First-Generation Week 2021.

2020 Course development student intern supervisor

In summer 2020, facing the high uncertainty and extraordinary challenge caused by the pandemic, Emory University called for student interns (paid) and faculty supervisors to support the development of online course materials. I helped a student of mine who was affected financially by the pandemic to apply for the internship. To prepare for the fully remote semester, we worked together to develop online materials for Calculus classes. The work we did proved to be critical for the subsequent remote teaching in Fall2020.

Fighting Hunger in Our Community

Hunger and food insecurity remain an urgent issue across the country, as 1 in 7 Americans face hunger every day, including 1 in 5 children. To help address hunger issues, I and some Emory students volunteered in Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB), sorting and packing food donations. The service at ACFB will eventually benefit 29 counties across metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Many people in the Emory community may live in an environment of plenty. I believe it is necessary to help more people understand how hunger persists and engage the community to take action against hunger.
