First ACES Workshop - December 2nd & 3rd

Prof. James Nagy's book Deblurring Images published by SIAM
Published Date: 2006-10-27 Professor James Nagy's book, "Deblurring Images: Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering" was published by SIAM Press. Abstract: When we use a camera, we want the recorded image to be a faithful representation of the scene that we see, but every image is more or less blurry. In image deblurring, the goal is to recover the original, sharp image by using a mathematical model of the blurring process. The book describes the deblurring algorithms and techniques collectively known as spectral filtering methods, in which the singular value decomposition -- or a similar decomposition with spectral properties -- is used to introduce the necessary regularization or filtering in the reconstructed image. The concise MATLAB implementations described in the book provide a template of techniques that can be used to restore blurred images from many applications. Prof. R. Parimala receives the Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal
Published Date: 2006-10-26 Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics R. Parimala was awarded the Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal for 2006. This prize is given once every three years to an eminent scientist whose work has had an impact in mathematics for a considerable length of time. From the citation: The prize was awarded to Prof. Parimala "for her outstanding contributions to Galois cohomology of semi-simple algebraic groups over fields of dimension less than or equal to 2, in particular for settling a conjecture of Serre for classical groups as well as for her contributions to the study of the u-invariant."

Emory moves up to 56th in world university rankings
Published Date: 2006-10-19 Emory is ranked 56th amongst universities worldwide, up from 141st in 2005, according to the rankings by the Times Higher Education Supplement. Emory is ranked 8th in the world for staff-to-student ratio. More information here

Prof. Eric Brussel receives Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award
Published Date: 2006-09-27 Professor Eric Brussel received the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award. This is the college's oldest and most prestigious award for undergraduate teaching. Seven Emory professors received the Emory Williams Award for Distinguished Teaching. The university's most prestigious awards for teaching were established in 1972 by alumnus Emory Williams. The three awards in the arts and sciences are selected by a committee of Emory College faculty. Goizueta Business School, Oxford College and Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing each present an award for excellence in undergraduate teaching, and one other award rotates among the professional schools. Parimala will be awarded the 2005 prize in mathematics by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) for her work on the quadratic analogue of Serre's conjecture, the triviality of principal homogeneous spaces for classical groups over fields of cohomological dimension 2 and the u-invariant of p-adic function fields. This is the first time that the prize has been awarded to a woman. More information here.

Prof. Eugene Agichtein joins the faculty
Published Date: 2006-08-20 Eugene Agichtein, formerly a postdoc at Microsoft Research, has joined the department as an assistant professor. His research interest includes information management and retrieval, and text mining and information extraction. He received his PhD from Columbia in 2005.
